Using auxiliary variables and implied constraints to model non - binaryproblemsBarbara

چکیده
We perform an extensive theoretical and empirical analysis of the use of auxiliary variables and implied constraints in modelling a class of non-binary constraint satisfaction problems called problems of distance. This class of problems include 1-d, 2-d and circular Golomb rulers. We identify a large number of diierent models, both binary and non-binary, and compare theoretically the level of consistency achieved by generalized arc consistency on them. Our experiments show that the introduction of auxiliary variables and implied constraints can signiicantly reduce the size of the search space. For instance, our nal models reduce the time to nd an optimal 10-mark Golomb ruler 50-fold.

Using Auxiliary Variables and Implied Constraints to Model Non-Binary Problems
We perform an extensive theoretical and empirical analysis of the use of auxiliary variables and implied constraints in modelling a class of non-binary constraint satisfaction problems called problems of distance. This class of problems include 1-d, 2-d and circular Golomb rulers. We identify a large number of different models, both binary and non-binary, and compare theoretically the level of ...
متن کاملModelling the Golomb Ruler
The Golomb ruler problem has been proposed as a challenging constraint satisfaction problem. We consider a large number of di erent models of this problem, both binary and non-binary. The problem can be modelled using quaternary constraints, but in practice using a set of auxiliary variables and ternary constraints gives better results. A binary encoding of the problem gives a smaller search tr...

متن کاملAutomated Auxiliary Variable Elimination Through On-the-Fly Propagator Generation
Model flattening often introduces many auxiliary variables. We provide a way to eliminate some of the auxiliary variables occurring in exactly two constraints by replacing those two constraints by a new equivalent constraint for which a propagator is automatically generated on the fly. Experiments show that, despite the overhead of the preprocessing and of using machine-generated propagators, e...

Climatic change can impose physiological constraints on species and can therefore affect species distribution. Bioclimatic predictors, including annual trends, regimes, thresholds and bio-limiting factors are the most important independent variables in species distribution models. Water and temperature are the most limiting factors in arid ecosystem in central Iran. Therefore, mapping of climat...
